The Cambria Hotel in downtown Louisville, Kentucky has been awarded LEED v4 Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the most widely used green building rating system in the world.
The design team was able to achieve LEED Silver certification on this upscale hotel by implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions in six key areas including location and transport, sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality. Examples of sustainability efforts during the design and construction of the project include adding bicycle racks and shower facilities for employees, fewer onsite parking spaces, electric car charging stations at on-site parking, heat island reduction by using white concrete paving and white single ply roofing, low flow plumbing fixtures, high efficiency HVAC systems, low environmental impact construction materials, diversion of construction waste materials for recycling, low-emitting materials, and LED light fixtures throughout.
“It was definitely a team effort including our consultants, the owner, and the general contractor. We were able to capture several additional points on optimizing energy performance that we hadn’t originally anticipated, which I believe is what pushed us into the Silver level. That was especially gratifying since LEED V4 is so much more challenging.” – Gerri Kielhofner, Architect & Project Manager
